BATAVIA — The Town Board has scheduled a public hearing for 7:15 p.m. Nov. 2 in the Town Hall on a tentative town 2023 budget of almost $17 million.
The tax levy proposed is $3,002,181. A portion of that levy, $1,701,181, is the proposed levy total that would go to Sewer District No. 2, water districts (combined) and the Fire District.
The preliminary 2023 town budget includes the following salaries: town supervisor, $49,125; deputy supervisor $18,000; three Town Board members, $12,000 each; town clerk/tax collector, $81,995; highway superintendent $20,704; and two town justices, $31,724 each.
The hearing is one of a few hearings the board set when it met Wednesday. Board members also set a hearing for 7 p.m. Nov. 2 on the 2023 fire protection contract with the town Fire Department. The portion of the levy that will pay for fire protection is $1,306,427.
After the hearing on the fire protection contract, the same night, there will be a public hearing on sewer rents from May 2023 to February 2024 in sewer districts 1 and 2. Sewer rents in both districts would be $7.23 per gallon, a 2% increase from the current rates.
Also Nov. 2, there will be a hearing on water rates for May 2023 to February 2024. The proposed base water rate will be $6.48 per 1,000 gallons of water used, a 2.5% increase. The agricultural water rate would be $5.25 per 1,000, also a 2.5% increase.
Also Wednesday evening, the board adopted a local law to override the tax levy limit the state set in general municipal law. Deputy Town Supervisor Dan Underhill said the town has overridden the levy limit each year in case any of the districts have an increase of higher than 2%.
“We do that every year … to protect ourselves,” he said. “We’ve done it every year since it came out. When we had a zero tax rate (increase), we did it to protect us.”
